Requirements for obtaining a spouse visa

1. Authenticity of the Marriage

2. Living Together

3. Communication Across Cultural and Language Differences

4. Financial Stability

5. Continuity of the Marriage

1. Authenticity of the Marriage

You will need to explain the history of your relationship, from how you met to how you came to be married.
Be as specific as possible — include details such as when, where, and how you met, and who introduced you, if applicable.

It’s also helpful to submit photos. Choose pictures that clearly show the timeline of your relationship, such as:

Photos with family or friends

Pictures taken at events, gatherings, or during trips

These help demonstrate that your relationship has developed naturally over time.

2. Living Together

  • If you are currently living together or plan to live together, you should prepare a copy of your lease agreement or, if you own the residence, the property registration document.

  • If you are not living together at the time of application, be ready to explain the reason.
If the Japanese spouse is sending living expenses to the applicant, bank transfer records will also be needed.

  • Please note that transfers made from bank accounts not in the names of either spouse may not be accepted as valid proof. Always use accounts under the applicant’s or their spouse’s name for any transfers.

3. Communication Across Cultural and Language Differences

  • In a Japanese spouse visa application, sharing a common language is essential to demonstrate genuine communication and understanding between the couple. Immigration authorities assess the authenticity of the relationship, and language compatibility supports this.

4. Financial Stability
IIf the Japanese spouse has a stable income, it should be proven using official documents such as a tax payment certificate or income certificate. In cases where the spouse is self-employed and the declared income is particularly low, additional documentation may be required—such as bank statements showing savings and a written explanation of how the couple plans to support their living expenses.

We are often asked, “How much income is required?”
While there is no fixed amount, the required income level depends heavily on the individual applicant's situation. However, the standard is not as strict as the 3 million yen annual income often referenced in permanent residency applications.

Commonly Required Supporting Documents

  • Statement of relationship (how you met, relationship history)

  • Photos together, chat logs (LINE, WhatsApp, email, etc.)

  • Proof of cohabitation (residence certificate, lease agreement)

  • Proof of income (income certificate, tax documents)

It is necessary that the marriage procedures have been completed in both countries at the time of application. Since procedures vary by country and some may take a considerable amount of time, we recommend allowing ample time to complete the process.

Note: In principle, changing your visa status directly from a Temporary Visitor visa to another type is not permitted. However, exceptions may apply, such as for a Spouse visa. We recommend consulting with an immigration specialist for guidance.
