You must comply with the law and have no criminal record.Minor traffic one is also declared but not always effects the approval.(Its depends on the case)

4.Status of Residence

Before applying for a permanent residence visa, you must already hold a 3year Period of Stay or more.If you keep getting 1year period, there are some reasons for not 3years period. Maybe you should have consult with a professional.

Special Cases

  • Spouse of a Japanese :

    • If you are married to a Japanese national or a permanent resident, you can apply for a permanent residence visa after 3 years of marriage and 1 year of continuous residence in Japan.

  • Long-Term Resident Visa:

    • Some holders of long-term resident visas can apply for a permanent residence visa after 5 years of residence.

Why are processing timelines longer?

  1. More applications. As more foreign nationals work and settle in Japan long-term, PR filings continue to rise. This is especially true in the Tokyo jurisdiction, creating heavier workloads and, in some cases, slower decisions.

  2. Tighter screening. Reviewers are looking more closely at tax and social-insurance compliance, traffic/penalty records (even minor citations can factor into the “good conduct” assessment), and status history (renewals/changes and any unexplained gaps). Expect follow-up questions if anything is unclear.
